Tens of thousands of Jewish and Arab protesters gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv over the weekend, to protest the Nation State Law, calling for the law’s cancellation.
The legislation was adopted in July 2018, and states that only Jews have the right to self determination in Israel and marginalises use of Arabic.
“We, a lot of Israelis, believe that they [minorities] are entitled to be equal to us,” protester Dan Meiri said. “It is the Jewish state but the people that live here are entitled to be equal to us across the board in education, in the army, in the universities, in the parliament – all over.”
The law has been widely condemned as discriminatory by international and domestic groups, including Israel’s Druze minority.
