On 5th February 2018, the Maldives government declared a state of emergency. Security forces have
been deployed in the capital Malé in response to political developments.
Maldives is amid a political crisis after the Supreme Court recently ruled that the trial of exiled
former president Mohamed Nasheed was unconstitutional and ordered the release of nine
lawmakers, a demand that Yameens government has refused to comply with.
Political protests and demonstrations often take place in Malé. Some have led to violence and
arrests.
There are no reports that outlying islands, resorts or Malé International Airport are affected at
present.
Persons visiting the island of Male should take appropriate security precautions, comply
with local security requirements and avoid crowded areas, protests and rallies.
